When you travel by air, the flight attendants always stress putting the oxygen mask on yourself before assisting those around you when dealing with an emergency. Likewise, it's important that those tasked with supporting others have an outlet for themselves when things get stressful. Support is the number one thing that most of us are lacking if I had to guess. No matter where we turn we seem to get doubt, judgment and push back about what we're dealing with and how it should be handled. We've gotten looks out in public about his diet. We've gotten advise from medical professionals that have said to solve all our problems we should do 2 things: 1) take away his PediaSure and 2) take away his video games. Apparently those 2 actions will get him eating a well balanced in a week without fail. Please visualize the dramatic eyeroll I just did writing that.
So what are parents to do? Where do they turn when they need support giving their kids the support they need? For one, anyone is welcome to contact me directly to talk it out. I'll be honest that I'm a hot mess when it comes to all this, but I won't judge you. What I highly recommend though is to check out some groups on facebook. There are communities of internet mom's and dad's out there who I promise are in the same boat that you are. Check out the ones I recommend below: Mealtime Hostage - The Group SED / ARFID Parent Support Group ARFID: Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder
